What Are Brown Spots
Brown spots are one of the most common skin issues. They can be caused by a variety of things such as acne, freckles, birthmarks, sun damage, and aging.
Brown marks that appear due to acne is something many people have experienced at some point in their lives- typically those with oily complexions who tend to break out more often than others.
What Causes Brown Spots
It is common for people to have brown spots on their skin. A lot of factors can cause these, but a few common reasons are sun damage and liver disease.
Sun exposure damages the collagen in our skin cells– leading them to break down more quickly than they should be able too, which leads to discoloration or darkening that occurs as melanin becomes trapped there.
How Do You Fix Brown Spots
Broadband Light is a perfect solution to your unwanted pigment issues such as age spots, freckles, etc. Dr. Delaney will adjust the equipment settings and filters to treat your skin type.
The treatment of brown spots usually takes a series of treatments especially if the brown spots are large and dark. After the treatments, you should avoid direct sun exposure, since UV rays can cause your skin cells to produce melanin which will make you more susceptible to sun damage and lead to hyperpigmentation (brown or black patches) on your face.
BBL encourages skin cell rejuvenation and collagen production while reducing troublesome spots. There is no downtime so you can go out and live your best life, seeing results within weeks to months.
BBL Brown Spots FAQ
How Does the Sciton BBL Treatment Work?
Broadband light (BBL) technology utilizes the power of light to treat the appearance of skin blemishes, brown spots, and fine lines. The light heats up the bottom layers of the skin, causing your skin to start producing extra collagen. BBL can also be adjusted to target melanin (the pigment responsible for skin blemishes) and vaporize it, leading to the reduced appearance of fine veins and skin hyperpigmentation.
Who Is a Candidate for the BBL Treatment?
Dr. Delaney will analyze your skin based on The Fitzpatrick skin typing classification. If it is right for you, a skin care program will be designed.
What is the BBL Procedure?
When you book a BBL treatment at the Elysium Medical Arts Center, you will have a consultation to assess your needs and suitability for the procedure.
The treatment itself is fairly simple. A soothing gel is placed on your face, and you are given protective goggles for your eyes. During the BBL treatment, you will feel a snapping sensation of bright light.
The procedure usually takes 35 to 40 minutes depending on the area being treated and the type of treatment being offered.
There is no downtime so you can easily go about your day after treatment.
BBL is typically done in a series. Depending on your particular needs, you will receive multiple treatments spaced out at intervals.
Results will be seen over time as you continue with your outlined plan.

Skin that’s naturally beautiful and visibly younger-looking, year after year!
These pre-and post-care instructions are intended to guide you through the treatment process and get you on your way to naturally beautiful skin!
WHAT TO DO BEFORE YOUR TREATMENT?
- Use sunscreen and physical sun protection.
- Avoid extended sun exposure, i.e. beach, travel to sunny locations, sunbathing, sports
- Inform your BBL clinician if any physician has ordered Accutane for you in the last 6 months.
- Inform your doctor of any medical conditions or medications you are taking that might sensitize you to light, affect wound healing or affect coagulation.
WHAT TO EXPECT DURING YOUR TREATMENT?
The procedure is typically gentle and safe. There is no need for a topical anesthetic. Your eyes will be protected with safety shields or glasses. You may briefly feel a warm or rubber band snap sensation as the light is absorbed.
WHAT TO DO AFTER YOUR TREATMENT?
You may experience some redness in the treatment area that should resolve within a few hours. You may notice the darkening of your pigmented spots, followed by fading and flaking off at a later stage. Follow your clinician’s aftercare plan. There is virtually no downtime after this non-invasive and gentle procedure. In most cases, you are able to apply make-up, return to work and resume most of your activities immediately.
TIPS & TRICKS
- Use soft cloth and towels to avoid any scrubbing.
- Wear a wide-brimmed hat or sun-protecting clothing post-treatment to avoid blistering, scarring, hyperpigmentation, and hypopigmentation.
WATCH-OUTS
If the treated area is especially warm within the first 12 hours after the treatment, a cold compress or ice pack can be used to provide comfort.
In the unlikely event, that the skin appears red or swollen (sunburn sensation), an icepack can provide comfort, the same as Vitamin E or Aloe Vera applied to the treatment area. In rare cases, oral pain relievers, i.e., Extra Strength Tylenol or Advil, may be used.
